What Makes ABB Drives Different?

ABB is the industry leader in harmonics reduction. Their ultra-low harmonic (ULH) drives stand apart from the competition, offering a longer lifespan for motors and ABB VFDs. Harmonics negatively affects electrical components and networks and can damage electrical components. They cause interference between devices, overheating of equipment, false data readings, and trip circuit breakers. ABB ultra-low harmonic drives reduce harmonics up to 97%.

ABB’s sensor-less vector control is a feature used in motor control that eliminates physical sensors from a drive system. This technology utilizes flux vector control, where you control the motor speed by changing the frequency, phase, and amplitude of the AC voltage supply to the motor. The three-phase AC voltage input is varied to control the three-phase stator current, resulting in control of the rotor flux vector and the rotor current individually. Like conventional sensor control, using sensor-less vector control allows the drive to control the speed and torque independently based on target operating conditions. Benefits of sensorless technology include a superior performance with low power consumption, high energy efficiency, and condition monitoring with adjustments. Still, most importantly, it eliminates the need for expensive sensors and their additional failure points.

All ABB VFD control boards are class 3C2 conformal coated for protection in harsh environments. All ABB VFD control boards are class 3C2 conformal coated for protection in harsh environments. See the chart below for corrosive levels of a variety of chemicals. This coating can be upgraded to 3C3 which is recognized by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and compliant with the US military specification MIL-I-46058C, IPC-CC-830 (Institute of Printed Circuits). The coating is acrylate polyurethane that protects against moisture, harsh chemicals, and corrosive agents such as H2S (hydrogen sulfide) gas and protects against mechanical stresses. This protection results in increased reliability of a device and increases the resilience of the complete control system.

How Can We Extend Your Warranty at Start Up?

Applied Industrial Controls, Inc. keeps ABB certified field engineers on staff who have years of experience across a broad range of applications. When one of our engineers commissions an ABB VFD, the warranty automatically extends for an additional two years at no additional charge. Additionally, this allows us to offer extended warranties of up to ten years which some water and wastewater specifications require.

Professional drive start up (also known as commissioning) optimizes both variable frequency drive and system capacity and boosts the performance of a new drive application. Some of the other benefits of efficient and effective commissioning include:

  • Operational Reliability - Professional commissioning is performed using the latest tools and methods. Every manager and business owner wants turnkey solutions so they can have absolute peace of mind and focus on the primary aspects of the business.
  • Cost Awareness - Operational efficiency will help you save money by ensuring the commissioning is executed quickly and efficiently and confirming that the automation system is operating at optimal performance.
  • Drive Registration - Serial numbers from commissioning are stored in the OEM’s database and available to be used later for maintenance support. This way, you don’t have to worry about misplacing documents or keeping large records for equipment. Proper registration reduces the time for replacement parts and warranty claims while ensuring proper installation.

Why Should I Use or Convert to an ABB PLC?

The ABB PLC uses open-source Codesys software. It has many features and capabilities that allow programming in standard PLC programming languages. Due to the open-source Codesys software, converting from a variety of manufacturers is easy as the logic structure of the program is identical. WAGO, Eaton, Turck, Omron, and Koyo, to name a few, all use Codesys and can be easily upgraded to ABB. Codesys contains many elements that support capabilities for adaptation of other devices, expandability, improved security, and user-friendly programming.

ABB is also focused on machine safety. In addition to their Jokab line of safety relays, light curtains, and other devices, ABB offers safety-rated PLCs. Through their AC500 line of PLCS, you can mix safety and standard-rated expansion cards. This allows you to reduce costs by eliminating the need for multiple PLCs or other safety relations.
