The tables below are intended to be a general guide for enclosure selection.
Always confirm the ratings and standards with the enclosure manufacturer.

2 Provides 100% protection from condensation and dripping liquids by using drip shields to divert and catch dripping liquid.

3S For outdoor use. Provides protection from windblown dust, falling dirt, rain, snow, and heavy ice conditions. IP54
3X For outdoor use. Provides protection from windblown dust, falling dirt, rain, snow, and ice. For use in or near saltwater environments. 'X' identifies extra corrosion resistance.  
3RX For outdoor use. Provides protection from falling dirt, rain, snow, and ice. For use in or near saltwater environments. 'X' identifies extra corrosion resistance.  
3SX For outdoor use. Provides protection from windblown dust, falling dirt, rain, snow, and heavy ice conditions. For use in or near saltwater environments. 'X' identifies extra corrosion resistance.  
4 Provides watertight protection. 'X' identifies extra corrosion resistance. IP66
4X Provides watertight protection. 'X' identifies extra corrosion resistance.  
5 Provides 100% protection from small dust particles by using gaskets for sealing. IP52
6, 6P For submersible use in water or oil. 6 is temporarily submersible & 6P is for occasional extended submersion. IP67
7 For indoor use in locations with specific hazardous environments. Class I, Group A,B,C,D.  
8 For indoor and outdoor use in locations with specific hazardous environments. Class I, Group A,B,C,D.  
9 For indoor and outdoor use in locations with specific hazardous environments. Class II, Group E,F,G.  
10 Meets requirements of MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration).  
11 General purpose. Provides protection from corrosive liquids and gasses.  
12, 12K General purpose. Provides some protection from dripping non-corrosive coolants, dust, and falling dirt. Designed for indoor use. IP52
13 General purpose. Provides protection from non-corrosive coolants, spraying water, dust, and oils. IP54
